I think you're right about Jon, to an extent. I think he's actually afraid that he'd start believing the hype around himself, and start thinking of himself as a star. He doesn't want to be larger-than-life in his own mind, or anyone else's. And it's understandable. The perspective of a comedian is from a place of the underdog, the anti-establishment. It doesn't suit mansions and bodyguards and limos. It suits tattered t-shirts, a messy office, a bald spot, an expanding tummy, and a healthy dose of self-deprication. All the things we love him for. ;-)

Stephen really does not have an ego, well, besides the fact that he loves himself. ;-) (All actors love themselves a little bit.) He is extremely charming and personable to the people he meets, wherever that might be, and I think his parents must have instilled that into him.

Jon I think honestly thinks that nobody would want to meet HIM, not the TV guy but the 44-year-old wearing the rumpled gray t-shirt. So when people do want to talk to him he's on guard a little. Whereas Stephen has not reached the on-guard stage yet, and if he ever does it won't be from thinking nobody could actually want to meet him but rather because he's finally gotten creeped out by the strangeness of having strangers adore him.

And yes I am totally jealous of your having met Jon! Alas it will likely never be for me. :-(

Stephen is amazing for not having an ego at this point. I think it's partly his nature, and partly because he knows what it's like to be a fan of someone. Rarely does a celebrity have experience on the other side of things.

As for Jon... well... I think the very fact that so few of us have met him kinda is indicative of a "get away" attitude, but I don't think it's an inflated-ego thing. I think he feels very awkward when someone professes their love to him, and he'd rather not deal with that. It's too bad. And when I say "too bad", I mean "too bad for all of ya who've never met him!" ;-)

I wish I'd been there for FIT too. I should have just said screw it and gotten to NYC earlier. Oh well, next year ...

They are all nice, all the ones I've met either from TDS/TCR or UCB. They could really have turned on the "I'm a star, get away" attitude by now and they don't. Even the ones who have really made it big, like Jon and Stephen. (Although I myself have not met Jon, but that's what I've heard.)

Isn't John wonderful?!? I really am touched by how excited he was for me doing the Cellar. It was sort of a 3-part conversation, one night talking about standup in general, the next time talking about me maybe doing the open mic and how *awesome* the Cellar is, and then this. He couldn't wait to find out if I'd done it, and I couldn't have been more thrilled to share the pics with him. :-)

And it's true -- these guys are completely clueless when it comes to their own fame. After the show at FIT (which I wish you'd been there for!), John, Riggle, and Helms were just standing around talking to us, far longer than they needed to. There's a rhythm to star-stalking that they don't understand! They're supposed to excuse themselves and shoo us fangirls away as soon as they give us what we want. But I'm damn glad they were keen to just hang out as long as we wanted. Such great guys, all of them.
