A ha, thanks! That makes a lot more sense than all those people having Super Bowl tickets. I had seen them all running down to the stage too and wondered (if they were regular spectators) "What kind of nutty security is this that people can just storm the stage?!" Their being hired extras definitely explains things!

Nope, no tickets, nor were they there to watch the game. Super Bowl organizers got a bunch of local kids together & brought them in as 'extras', probably just for the offer of a possible half-second TV appearance. They got ferried into the stadium onto the field right after the stage was set up, and back off and out after the halftime show was over. The general criteria for the gig: young, enthusiastic, attractive, and (ideally) knowing enough of Tom Petty's repertoire that they might be seen singing along.

OK, that's based on secondhand knowledge from a different Super Bowl. But the people that put these things together prefer to leave little to chance. They'd set the final score in advance if they thought they could get away with it ...
